Dentist

Richard Downs, D.D.S.

Dr. Downs is a very caring and capable professional. It is very obvious that he understands what it is like to be a patient seated in the chair awaiting treatment. I am very grateful for his sensitive, yet highly professional and competent approach to his patients, whom he treats as individuals, devoting to them his undivided attention. He has been successful in instilling that same degree of compassionate competence in his assistants and coworkers, as well.

Dr. Richard Downs has been practicing dentistry in Dubuque since the summer of 1978. At that time, he and his wife Colette moved to Dubuque from the Great Lakes Naval Base North of Chicago with their two children Jeff and Ryan. Both Colette and Richard grew up in Marshalltown, Iowa and completed college educations at the University of Iowa before Richard went on to Dental School. At graduation in 1975, Dr. Downs was awarded the Academy of General Dentistry Senior Dental Student award by the faculty. The award is given by vote of the dental school faculty to the student they believe shows the most knowledge, skill and proficiency in general dentistry. After graduation, Dr. Downs spent three years in the Navy as a Naval Dental Officer.

Dr. Downs has constantly educated himself and his staff in the rapid advances in dentistry. Not only did Dr. Downs go on after dental school to complete a two-year orthodontic non-specialty education for general dentists, but he also attained a Fellowship in a two year study in the "Misch Implant Institute" in Detroit and a Fellowship in the "International Congress of Oral Implantologists". He then completed comprehensive written exams in implantology for the "American Academy of Implantology". He again achieved another Fellowship award in the "Academy of General Dentistry" and is past editor and President of the "Iowa Academy of General Dentistry". Dr. Downs is also a member of the International Congress of Oral Implantologists and has completed studies of the Anterior Aesthetics program at the prestigious Pacific Aesthetic Continuum and the Advanced Functional Restorative Dentistry course at the Las Vegas Institute (L.V.I.). He is also an internationally recognized expert in halitosis diagnosis, control and treatment and gives lectures internationally on the subject of bad breath control and wound healing biology. His web site is well known and can be viewed online at http://www.breath-care.com.

He has recently completed a bone grafting course at the Las Vegas Institute and then a CT cone beam implant course which allows him to place implants on 3 D images of the jaws. Sinus bone augmentations with balloon and tenting techniques and nerve tracking make this one of the most successful and safe implant protocols in the world. The I-cat CT scans can be done at the office and used to make precise implant surgical guides that place implants in exacting positions. To see more about implants, go to our Implants page.

As a result of the union of these fields of study (implant surgical placement and implant restoration, orthodontics, periodontics, oral surgery and cosmetics) and realizing the unique opportunity to impact comprehensive cosmetic concerns with treatment available in one single dental practice, Dr. Downs and his staff are continuing their education into the exciting field of cosmetic dentistry and have since renamed the dental practice, Abbadent Family and Cosmetic Dentistry. They use the Sapphire in office bleaching system and have a fast growing Cosmetic Veneer and reconstructive practice

Our newest laser can also complete many fillings with no anesthetic while leaving a near flawless look to the teeth. This laser can also be used for gentle recontouring of gum tissues around the teeth for even better results. Using these varied skills, they can address cosmetic dentistry with an array of knowledge that allows them to use more options to optimize beautiful results.

The practice name (ABBA) reflects their passion to serve, listen to and gently treat all patients they have the privilege to care for. ABBA means Father and comes from the Bible and is there in the name Abbadent to honor God. They do look forward to seeing you and the friends and family you recommend to their care.
